About Brian

Hello and welcome.
Now watch this drive.

Brian Mulligan teeing off on a golf course

I'm Brian, a Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate and Certified Addiction Technician in Colorado, and a bad golfer (that shot went in the water). I focus on working with adult men who contend with anxiety, depression, life transitions, career dissatisfaction, anger, and substance use concerns.

When people talk about "holding space", I don't know what that means. If someone just wants to talk, they can do that with a friend, family member, or coworker for free. What I focus on is helping people make meaningful change in their lives, because that is what they are investing in. I work hard for my clients because your time is valuable, and therapy should produce results.

Let's take all this space we're holding and do something with it.

I spent six years writing commercials for ad agencies before I found this work, and that experience still shows up in how I think: fast, direct, allergic to filler. I use evidence-based methods, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and mindfulness, but I don't run therapy off a script. Nobody's path looks the same, so nobody gets a manual.

I also know what it's like to be the guy who looks fine and isn't. I dealt with real anxiety and panic attacks earlier in my life, the kind that show up no matter how many campaigns you've sold. Working through that with a therapist of my own is part of why I do this work today, and part of why I don't buy the idea that insight alone fixes anything. You can understand exactly why you're anxious and still be anxious. Real change takes more than a diagnosis.

I started my career in residential addiction treatment. Today, most of my clients are busy professionals, lawyers, executives, business owners, guys managing more than anyone around them realizes.

Outside the office: reading, working out, a golf handicap I'd rather not discuss, and Denver sports. I take the work seriously. I don't take myself too seriously.

I'm looking forward to meeting you.

Casual conversation is free, available anytime from friends and family. Therapy should produce something you couldn't get from a bar stool.
